Nail  fungus is a common nail disease that usually finds itself in toe nails. It is also called toenail fungus commonly and onychomycosis medically. Nail fungus is a type of fungii that requires damp atmosphere to grow. When feet are closed in shoes all day, this condition can be developed. It can also happen due to multiple coats of nail polish on the toe nails. The biggest and smallest to are most likely to be affected being at the sides of your feet.

Nail fungus is not very common in children and is found mostly in adults. Nail fungus is infectious and can spread from one person to other especially those who use public wash rooms, towels, showers etc. People with diabetes or HIV infection are more prone to nail fungus as compared to others.

How do you know that you are affected with nail fungus? Well, you can see a yellowish or brown coloration on your nail, it will be overgrown or thick if you are affected with this disease. If you are affected with nail fungus, your nail may even become weak, break or fall off.  Otherwise the affected nail may become to thick and make it uncomfortable for you to put your shoes on. Nail fugus can easily be detected in a lab by viewing through microscope. If you seek medical help, visit a doctor who would take samples of the fungii and advice you accordingly. Nail fungus can also be cured through natural and home remedies and generally, medical help is not required.

Nail fungus can get severe if not taken care of properly. As soon as you notice any symptom of nail fungus, take some action immediately. For diabetics, it is adviced to see a doctor immediately so as to reduce the impact of the fungal infection. If ignored in the initial stages, it can become painful and  hamper your daily operations.
There are simple medicines and nail polish for mild nail fungus infections and oral pills for stronger ones. Its better to treat the infection when it is mild because the oral medication has some unpleasant side effects that should be avoided. For extreamly severe infections, surgery is the only option.

Prevention is better than cure and it is wiser to be careful and avoid nail fungus in the first place. Always make sure your socks and shoes are clean and dry before you wear them. Wear open sandals whenever possible will keep toes airy and avoid fungal groth. Kepping feet clean and dry and nails short and well trimmed is another preventive measure.
